Driver In Fatal May Mission District Crash Arrested: SF Police

The crash left one person dead and three injured, police said.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A 57-year-old Discovery Bay man has been arrested in connection with a fatal crash in San Francisco's Mission District in May, police said.

Samuel Powell, 57, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and failing to exercise due care for the safety of any pedestrian within the roadway, the San Francisco Police Department said in a statement Wednesday.

Police have yet to detail the cause of the crash. But Powell is accused of hitting at least four people with his car in the area of 16th and Mission streets during the early hours of Monday, May 25.

One pedestrian was taken to a local hospital, where they later died, police said, while the three others suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were assessed at the scene.

"Through the course of the investigation, officers located the suspect vehicle and detained the occupant of the vehicle," police said on Wednesday. Officers later developed enough probable cause against Powell and took him into custody on Tuesday in connection with the incident.
