SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Harrison Bader's career with the San Francisco Giants hangs in the balance after aggravating a left foot injury by crashing into the back of a firetruck while riding a scooter last month.
Bader, who hasn't played since May due to plantar fasciitis in his left foot, was driving a scooter around 2 a.m. in San Francisco's Marina District when he crashed, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The crash delayed the 32-year-old outfielder's "prior treatment timeline for plantar fasciitis and, unfortunately, his return to the field," Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey said in a statement.
The ballclub is investigating the incident, according to Posey, who said Friday that Bader would not be getting paid until he returns to the lineup.
Bader signed a two-year, $20.5 million contract with the Giants after a down year that saw him play only 50 games with the Philadelphia Phillies.
That contract included a $4.5 million base salary for this season, for which he was owed $1.42 for the remainder of the season.
The move to suspend Bader's pay is unusual, as it's an action typically reserved for violations of the drug policy, gambling or cheating incidents, such as when two Cleveland Guardian's ptichers were accused of placing bets earlier this year.
The Players Association may protest the suspension, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Before his injury, Baders was struggling at the plate, hitting .170 with five homers in 30 games. It's unclear what his Giants future may hold.
This wasn't the first time Bader found himself in a similar situation. Bader was also suspended in college following a scooter crash in Gainesville, Florida, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
