Man Identified After Deadly San Francisco Assault

The man was attacked on July 24 and died at the hospital more than a week later, authorities said.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A man who was assaulted in broad daylight last month in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood was identified by the San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office.

Paul Helsom, a 64-year-old man from San Francisco, was identified as the victim of the homicide.

On July 24 at approximately 4 p.m., police responded to the 200 block of Jones Street regarding an aggravated assault. At the scene, officers and paramedics found Helsom suffering life-threatening injuries and provided first aid.

Helsom was transported to a hospital and received medical care but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Aug. 4.

Police have not announced any arrest connected to the assault.

After Helsom's death, the SFPD Homicide Detail is now investigating the case as a homicide. Anyone with information is asked to contact SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411.
