San Francisco Plans Lower Speed Limits Around Schools

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is expanding lower speed limits near schools.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — San Francisco is lowering speed limits around schools, increasing traffic enforcement, and continuing to provide crossing guards as students return to class Monday, Mayor Daniel Lurie's administration announced Friday.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is expanding 15- and 20-mph speed limits near schools under a state law and plans to phase out 25-mph school-zone limits at more than 230 public and private schools by 2028, a press release noted.

The state requires California cities to make the changes by 2031.

The city also is expanding traffic enforcement around schools.

Automated speed cameras, operating at 33 locations since March 2025, have contributed to an almost 80% decline in speeding citywide. At schools with cameras, speeding has fallen by as much as 94% compared with levels before the cameras were installed, the city said.

SFMTA also will introduce Muni changes beginning Aug. 29, including a new one-seat ride from Visitacion Valley to Francisco Middle School and a new 28R Rapid stop near 19th Ave. And Eucalyptus Drive to make it more convenient for Lowell High School students, according to the city.

Several major routes also will receive increased frequency or capacity.
