SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A Muni train driver suffered minor injuries after falling asleep shortly before crashing into another train in San Francisco, a recently released video shows.
The driver was operating the train around 47th and Wawona streets near the San Francisco Zoo on the morning of July 31, when he suddenly appears to nod off, the video, obtained by Norcal Bodycam and published to YouTube on Friday, shows.
The driver appears to react to what is happening just before the train crashes, shattering the front window. Slowly, he then appears to realize what happened.
Both trains were empty at the time of the crash, fire officials told ABC News. The incident report obtained by Norcal Bodycam states the operator was treated for minor injuries at the scene and released.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Patch.
In a statement to ABC News, the agency said the crash was "simply unacceptable" and that a formal investigation was ongoing.
"Vehicle and infrastructure issues have been ruled out, and the initial determination for the incident is operator error caused by fatigue," the agency told ABC News.
Last year, another Muni driver was operating a train at 50 miles per hour when they suddenly fell asleep. The driver in that video appears to lose control of the train, jolting passengers aboard.
