SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A mountain lion that was spotted Saturday night by a San Francisco resident walking their dog near the Golden Gate Park panhandle was believed to have safely left the area by Sunday.
A person reported the big cat had run up a tree after being spooked by them and their dog near Fell and Baker streets at about 8:30 p.m., according to a spokesperson with the City Administrator's Office.
A Recreation and Parks Department officer confirmed the mountain lion was in the tree shortly after the initial sighting, leading to an alert for residents in the area to be on the lookout.
Officers from San Francisco Animal Care and Control, the Recreation and Parks Department, and California Department of Fish and Wildlife monitored the area overnight to try to ensure calm and quiet conditions could allow the cat to move out of the area and head back to the wilderness.
The mountain lion was believed to have left the area sometime overnight via a nature corridor and was no longer in the city, the City Administrator's Office said.
The big cat did not display signs of aggression.
Anyone who sees a mountain lion in the city was asked to report it to San Francisco Animal Care and Control at (415) 554-9400.
