'Breathtaking': A Seabird's Return To SF Creates A Natural Spectacle

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A very noisy but "striking" display of nature is taking over the Presidio wetland near the Golden Gate Bridge.

"The Elegant Terns have returned to Crissy Marsh and if you know, you know," Presidio park officials said in an online statement. "If you don't, this is your sign to find out."

The birds pass through each fall as they travel along the ancient migratory superhighway stretching from the Arctic to South America, known as the Pacific Flyway, according to Presidio officials.

The large Presidio watershed becomes a rest stop for these birds on their journey, officials said, creating "one of San Francisco's most breathtaking natural spectacles."

"Bring binoculars. Wear layers. Walk the boardwalk and let the marsh (and the birds) do the rest," Presidio officials said.

Crissy March opened in 2001 as part of San Francisco's shoreline restoration. Today, more than 100 bird species pass through the "irresistible" wetland.
