CHP Is Targeting Drivers Violating One Particular Law On The Bay Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Solo drivers thinking of skipping traffic on the Bay Bridge through the bus or carpool lane at the toll plaza may get an expensive surprise.

California Highway Patrol is partnering with Caltrans and the Bay Area Toll Authority this month to focus on occupancy laws in the bus and carpool lanes.

The main focus will be on the westbound lane that connects to the toll plaza from I-80, I-880 and West Grand Avenue, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

"The signs at access points to the lane are clear and unambiguous," CHP Lieutenant Ed Clarke said in a statement. "They read 'Buses Only.' But many drivers have not consistently followed the rule in recent years."

Drivers in carpools with three or more people can use the lanes during peak hours on weekdays (5 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.), transportation officials said.

But those who fail to follow that driving may be subject to a fine of $490 or more, authorities said.

"The CHP, Caltrans and BATA agree that focused enforcement will help address ongoing violations, improve compliance with the posted restrictions, and ensure the lane remains available for its intended use," transportation officials said.
