SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A 31-year-old man was convicted in connection with a brutal and random attack on two people during an attempted robbery in San Francisco over the summer, prosecutors said.

A San Francisco jury found Tasesa Sio guilty of attempted robbery and assault causing great bodily injury, charges stemming from the June 18 attack on two young men in the city's Outer Richmond area, prosecutors said.

"People in San Francisco deserve to walk down our streets without fear of harm," San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said in a statement on Wednesday. "I'm glad that Mr. Sio will be held accountable for his actions against these two young men."

Prosecutors say Sio walked up to the two men in the 500 block of Gellert Drive and asked them for the time.

The two men gave Sio the time, and then the 31-year-old asked to borrow a cellphone, prosecutors said.

The men refused, prompting Sio to start threatening them and make multiple swipes to take the phone, prosecutors said.

Sio then assaulted one of the men, swinging a backpack at him, and grabbing his testicles before kicking and punching him, prosecutors said.

Sio rode off on a bicycle after unsuccessfully trying to take the phone, prosecutors said. Deputies located him six days later in the Mission District and arrested him in connection with the assault.

Sio is due back in court on Dec. 14 for sentencing, prosecutors said. It is unclear how much prison time he faces on each charge.
