SAN CARLOS, CA — San Carlos officials are considering stricter RV parking limits and higher fines after local businesses complained about blocked parking spaces and disrupted deliveries, according to Palo Alto Daily Post.
During an Oct. 26 study session, the city directed staff to develop parking restrictions for oversized vehicles in eastern commercial areas, according to California Record's meeting summary.
The proposal would limit daytime RV parking to four hours between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and increase fines for overnight parking violations.
San Carlos currently prohibits overnight RV parking on public streets between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., with violations carrying a $50 fine.
Under the proposed changes, the first violation would cost $100, followed by fines of $200 for subsequent violations.
A city survey found that 14 of 18 responding businesses considered RV parking a problem, while two disagreed and two did not answer the question, the Daily Post reported.
Residents were more divided, with 28 of 52 respondents identifying RV parking as an issue and 24 saying it was not.
City officials considered a broader RV parking ban but raised concerns about potential legal challenges. Staff instead recommended targeted restrictions, improved signage and higher fines.
Council members also asked staff to examine loading zones, enforcement hours and outreach to affected businesses.
No new restrictions have taken effect. Staff must draft an ordinance for the council to consider before the proposed changes can become law.
