Call for San Carlos Artists: Paint a Utility Box

San Carlos is looking for artists to create murals on the city's utility boxes. These 18 boxes are located on intersections w stop lights

The City of San Carlos has put out a call to artists. There are 18 utility boxes in San Carlos that will be painted, as public art. The city owned utility boxes are located on the intersections where there are stoplights (not including those on El Camino). These drab, grey metal boxes can be transformed with your art.
I can provide some of the information, but the application and more complete details will be available on the City's park and rec website on Monday.

What: Submit a design for a utility box that includes all sides: front, back, 2 sides and top. The design must be suitable for all ages. You can request which box you would like to paint, but this cannot be guaranteed. While a student is eligible for one of the regular utility boxes, the utility box on the corner of San Carlos Ave and Club will be designated for students. We would like to support art in our youth. The art on that box will be changed annually, where the art on the other boxes is expected to last 10 years.

How: Artists will be asked to submit their application and design by JUNE 30th. A resume of other art the artist has created will be included in the application. Students will need both parental consent and support of an art teacher.

Process: Once the applications are submitted, they will be reviewed by the committee, consisting of 2 city council members, 2 park, rec and culture commissioners and one member of the community. Once selected, the artist will be notified and the necessary paperwork must be completed. The artists will attend an orientation session, then they will have up to 2 months to complete their work.

Compensation: The artist will be paid $500 for their work, $250 an the beginning of the project and $250 on completion. The art becomes property of the city. The artist is responsible for providing their own supplies
