This is my very first post on my very first blog. It's about birthdays - and what San Carlans are doing to help make sure everyone gets more of them - birthdays, I mean. The San Carlos Relay for Life is coming up on August 3rd and 4th in Burton Park.
Last year was the first San Carlos Relay. I was pleased to be a volunteer, and this year I'm back in! (More later on why fighting this fight is so important to me.) For now, just a little Relay 101.
Relay for Life is a 24-hour walking relay to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society's efforts to fight cancer through research and support to those fighting the disease.
Participants form teams that raise money (either from fun fund-raising events or just plain asking friends to sponsor them). Members of the team take turns walking laps - the idea is that someone from the team is walking during the entire 24-hour relay.
And all during the day and night, the Relay Committees are supporting the walkers with activities, music, entertainment, food.
So stay tuned - I'll be writing about how you can be involved - in a big way or in a small way. Either way, it feels good to know you're part of something that helps your fellow San Carlans.
