Man Dies in Parking Lot of San Carlos McDonald's

A man whose identity has not yet be released, was pronounced dead by firefighter paramedics at approximately 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of the restaurant located at 180 El Camino Real in San Carlos.

and paramedics responded to the scene, where the man was unconscious in the back of a gold van. According to San Carlos Deputy Fire Chief Stan Maupin, the first arriving engine company found citizens performing CPR on the man. The man's girlfriend, who has not been identified, was with him when he died.

While the investigation is ongoing, Lt. Larry Schumaker of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department said it appeared the man died from a medical condition and foul play is not suspected.

Investigators from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office/San Carlos Police Bureau are still gathering information about the incident according to Schumaker.

Brian Colby, manager of the McDonald's restaurant said he did not have any information on the incident and did not know how long the van had been parked in the parking lot.

On Wednesday afternoon, Tom Schramm, who identified himself as a friend of the deceased's, arrived to pick up the van, which he said belonged to the deceased man's girlfriend.

Schramm told Patch that his friend had been released from San Mateo County Jail on Tuesday, but he did not know the cause of death.

Two bags of food and two cups of coffee, presumably left by the man and his girlfriend, were in the front seat of the van when Schramm entered it. 

On the attempts of citizens to revive the man, Chief Maupin said, "Citizen involvement in early intervention with basic life support measures such as CPR and the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), when available, prior to our arrival is critical to increasing a person’s chances of survival when in cardiac arrest. We fully encourage all citizens to learn CPR in order to be able to react quickly in an event like this."
