New Fire Chief Named for San Carlos
Stan Maupin will serve as chief for both Redwood City and San Carlos.
The following is a news release from the City of Redwood City:
The City of Redwood City announced today the appointment of Stan Maupin as fire chief for the fire departments of both Redwood City and San Carlos. Melissa Stevenson Diaz appointed Maupin following a national executive search that began in 2015 as a result of the retirement of Chief Jim Skinner. Maupin’s appointment is effective as of January 4, 2016.
“Following an extensive national search, I am confident Stan is the best choice for the future of both the City of Redwood City and San Carlos communities,” said Melissa Stevenson Diaz, city manager of the City of Redwood City. “Stan’s extensive fire experience and leadership put him at the top of the candidate list and will serve our communities well. I also found the high level of respect of both cities’ fire personnel and fire leadership a critical aspect to his continued success leading both departments and protecting our communities.”
Maupin has over twenty-seven years of experience in the fire service and over thirteen years of executive level leadership. An eight year veteran of the Redwood City Fire Department, Maupin has served as interim fire chief since November 2, 2015 and prior to this appointment was deputy chief of the Redwood City Fire Department and served as San Carlos Fire Chief since 2011.

“Stan’s visionary leadership and experience in shared fire services has served our joint department extremely well the past five years,” said Jeff Maltbie, city manager of the City of San Carlos. “I am confident he will continue to ensure both communities receive the highest quality fire and emergency medical services.”
Maupin served for four years as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps before beginning his career in the fire service as a volunteer firefighter with Foster City in 1988. He joined the Tracy Fire Department as a full-time firefighter in 1990. He moved to the Foster City Fire Department in 1991, where he worked through the ranks to Battalion Chief before leaving for Redwood City’s fire department in 2007. As strike team leader since 2003, Maupin has helped fight over 12 State of California wildfires and has also served as line safety officer to ensure the safety of firefighters statewide.
Maupin has held various leadership positions at the State and County level, including five years as chair of the State of California High Rise Committee, previous chair of the operations and training sub-committees of San Mateo County Fire Chief’s Association, and chair of the San Mateo County Deputy Chiefs, which he currently holds. Maupin is a long-standing member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and is actively involved in the National Fire Academy, where he’s continued his management and leadership training through executive fire officer courses.
Maupin is a proud San Mateo County resident since 1979 and lives in the city of San Mateo with his two daughters. Maupin coaches AYSO soccer and enjoys outdoor hobbies like kayaking and mountain biking.
Chief Jim Skinner announced his retirement in May of this year and agreed to stay on through the appointment of a new city manager. Skinner was hired by the Redwood City Fire Department in May of 1982, and served as chief since 2008. His last day with the City of Redwood City was November 2, 2015. The national executive search was led by Teri Black & Company, LLC.
