Restaurant Row: San Remo's Ristorante and Pizzeria

San Carlos Patch searches for the city's best pizza. First stop, San Remos.

Does San Remo's have the best pizza in the city?

When it comes to pizza, San Remo’s Ristorante & Pizzeria has been the one consistent place I’ve heard San Carlans rave about since I started covering the city last fall.

Yes, more so than Speederia, despite the huge amount of love and loyalty many have to the Laurel Street institution. And yes, more than Piacere, which offers pizzas at a slightly (not so slight) higher price.

When San Carlans gush over San Remo’s, they do so with an exuberance that makes me feel as if they’re about to change whatever plans they had to stop by the cozy haunt and grab a slice. Or two. Or three.

The restaurant holds a three-and-a-half star rating on Yelp with 108 reviews.

The first San Remo’s opened in 1951 in San Jose by Gennaro Alfinito with the help of his sons. After 40 years and several new culinary ventures, the family brought their beloved pizza to San Carlos.

Despite having several locations, San Remo’s somehow manages to escape the stigma of being a regional chain and remains a family-owned establishment that is a favorite among residents here.

Have you tried San Remo’s pizza? What do you think? What’s your favorite pizza in the city?
