San Carlos United Waves Win NorCal State Cup - First Win in Club History

San Carlos United Waves U12 Girls Win NorCal State Cup

This past weekend, the U-12 San Carlos Waves finished an undefeated run through the NorCal State Cup by beating the Mountain View Los Altos (MVLA) Lightning, in a shootout, to win the NorCal Platinum Girls State Cup. The team, coached by Henry Arredondo, began the State Cup in a bracket made up of 54 teams from all over Northern California.

The finals were a hard fought game, with San Carlos striker, Julia Deffner scoring the go-ahead goal mid-way through the second half. MVLA fought back to equalize with ten minutes left in the game. The tie led to a sudden death overtime during which the game remained tied at 1-1. With ten seconds left in the second overtime, the stadium lights went out. After waiting around for 20 minutes, the lights came back on and both teams agreed to call the overtime and move directly to penalty kicks.

Waves goalkeeper Sarah Stampleman was first up in the goal and stopped the first MVLA shot. This was followed by a successful shot to the lower corner by Waves defender, Gabi Dembinski. Stampleman stopped an additional two shots by MVLA players and both Jules Kuramoto and Sharena Martin, of the Waves, responded with strong shots that got past the MVLA keeper.
