Would-Be Burglar Scared Off By San Carlos Resident

Sheriff's officials say the resident heard a loud noise, and discovered someone was trying to break into the home.

SAN CARLOS, CA- A would-be San Carlos burglar was thwarted this week when a homeowner confronted him inside a residence, police report.

According to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded at 9:30 p.m. Monday to the 3400 block of Brittan Avenue on a report of a burglary in progress at a residence.

Deputies said the resident heard a loud noise in the backyard and discovered a rear sliding glass door had been smashed and a suspect was entering the residence.

"The resident called out to the suspect who immediately fled on foot," the sheriff's office said in a news release. "The resident retreated to the bedroom and called 911."

Deputies responded with K-9 units and established a perimeter around the area, sheriff's officials said. But after searching for the suspect for about 45 minutes, the K-9 team lost the tracking scent, deputies said.

Investigators said the suspect likely entered the residence based on the belief no one was home. He was described as a man wearing all dark clothing and possibly a hooded sweatshirt, according to the sheriff's office.

"Residents are being advised lock and secure their homes at all times, add timers to lights in one or two rooms to give the appearance that someone is home and report suspicious persons or vehicles to their local police or sheriff’s office."
