I’m 54, and I’ve lived with depression and anxiety and panic attacks all my life after being sexually abused by my father as a young child. I had separated from my husband and was going through a really difficult time in my life, drinking and using marijuana. I injured my back at work, and lost the room where I was living, and reached a point of desperation when I realized I really needed help and checked out detox centers for alcohol and marijuana. I actually tried to kill myself in the first detox treatment center and was transferred to another one. After detox I knew I still needed more help, and was lucky enough to find Sovereign Health, which offered dual diagnosis treatment.
I was scared to death, but I moved into a house, and the ladies I was living with were very nice, and slowly I became more relaxed. I didn’t know what it would be like, I just figured there would be some group sessions. I wasn’t expecting how in depth Sovereign would get in terms of understanding the causes of my substance abuse and the depth of my pain, but they gave me good tools to prevent relapse. My therapist has just been wonderful.
I am actually a painter, so when I understood that they had art therapy treatment available I was just really excited. Sovereign Health is really strong in terms of helping people be able to look inside themselves and understand what it is that brought them to that point of heavy self-destruction. For me personally they have been really good at rebuilding self esteem, rebuilding my soul from being a very broken person. After 90 days it has given me a really good understanding of my weaknesses and strengths. I am excited to go back into the world, and actually have plans on going back to college at the age of 54 and turn my life around.
