CITY OF SAN CLEMENTE HAS NEW POLICE CHIEF
7/15/2021…San Clemente, California… The City of San Clemente is pleased to announce the appointment of Captain Tony Benfield to the position of Chief of San Clemente Police Services. Captain Benfield has been a member of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department since 1997. He was born and raised in northern California.

Captain Benfield currently services as Chief of Police Services for South Patrol, which services Orange County unincorporated areas including Coto De Caza, Ladera Ranch, and Rancho Mission Viejo. As Chief of Police Services, he manages patrol operations, investigations, Directed Enforcement Team, Juvenile Services Bureau and administrative duties.
About the appointment, an OCSD representative said, “Captain Benfield comes to San Clemente with a broad background in investigations and patrol operations. He is looking forward to getting to know the community, and prioritizing community and Council needs.”
“We want to extend a huge thank you to Captain Manhart for serving as the City’s Chief of Police Services for more than 2 years, and congratulate him on his exciting new role,”
said Mayor Kathy Ward. “We are pleased to welcome Captain Benfield to our community. His experience and positive leadership will be a good fit for San Clemente.”
Captain Benfield is married and has two children, ages 13 and 16. He enjoys outdoor activities and spending time with his family. The appointment of Captain Benfield is effective July 16, 2021, and he will be introduced at the City Council meeting on July 20, 2021.
