City Of San Clemente To Vote On New Coastal Resiliency Plan

The San Clemente City Council will determine whether or not to adopt a Coastal Resiliency Plan to combat shore erosion at Tuesday's meeting.

SAN CLEMENTE, CA — After months of toil, tweaking and community input, the City of San Clemente is ready to vote on the adoption of a Coastal Resiliency Plan. The plan will be considered at a public hearing on Tuesday during the San Clemente City Council meeting, and the community is encouraged to attend.

The Coastal Resiliency Plan is designed to serve as a "near term and long-range planning and guidance document" to combat potential sea-level rise in the future, as well as its effects on San Clemente, according to a press statement released by the city.

For San Clemente, shoreline erosion is anticipated to be a growing problem for the community, the city wrote in an agenda report. The Coastal Resiliency Plan is intended to address these issues by taking proactive measures to protect the community's coast.

"In San Clemente, shoreline erosion is expected to continue to be the primary hazard affecting coastal resources, existing structures and critical public infrastructure," the city wrote in an agenda report.

The plan builds on findings and recommendations found in the city's 2019 Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment, and suggests a "phased approach" to bettering long-term coastal resiliency for the city as a whole.

The plan was initially presented to the city's Beaches, Parks and Recreation Commission in October. From there, it was considered by the city's Planning Commission in November.

Now, the San Clemente City Council will deliberate whether or not to adopt this program and begin a phased approach for dealing with future sea-rise levels in the city.

San Clemente City Councilmembers meet on Tuesday at 6 p.m., 100 N. Calle Seville.
