The CRE8 Program at Clarence Lobo Elementary School will celebrate its third year with a Gallery Grand Opening on Thursday, June 12, from 5:00 to 7:00pm. The theme of the evening is “A Walk Through Mondrian.” Clarence Lobo Elementary School is located at 200 Avenida Vista Montana, San Clemente, CA 92672.
“CRE8” has become a popular arts adventure for all Lobo students. The C stands for Creative; R for Right Brain, E for Expression and 8 for the eight creative sessions held each school year. The 2013-2014 season kicked off with sketchbooks given to every student thanks to a generous donation from Target Corporation. Monthly sessions saw Thanksgiving Still Life followed by Holiday Paper Mache ornaments in December. The New Year brought Geometric Shapes in Oil Pastels on Paper; kinetic sculptures and mobiles in the spirit of Alexander Calder; pastel flowers and buildings in the style of Georgia O’Keeffe. Students also produced colored pencil on paper, reminiscent of Maxfield Parrish.
The Gallery Grand Opening will feature an installation honoring Mondrian, along with a selection from all the works of art, as well as students’ sketchbooks.
The Mondrian-inspired canvases will be placed on the floor of the Multi-Purpose Room, so that guests can walk-through the art. In 2013, the gallery featured a ‘Trash City’ built with recycled materials. In 2012, every student contributed to a 5X20 canvas installation in Jackson Pollack’s free style technique.
The evening will include an Opportunity Drawing, Bake and House Plant sale, face painting, cotton candy, and chalk drawing. The Lobo Elementary School PTA will offer LOBO Spirit Wear and manage ticket sales.
CRE8 is the brain-child of Lyn Hiner, artist, and local architect Alura Aguilar.”We wanted to give our children an opportunity to step away from academics to be immersed in a creative environment. Now, for a few minutes each month, all Lobo students have a chance to explore the right side of their brains — the CRE8-ive side!”
CRE8 is volunteer-based and self-sustaining, with funds generated from annual events such as The Art Gallery Grand Opening.
