Coastal Clean Up Day In San Clemente

SAN CLEMENTE, CA — 53 sites across Orange County hosted official beach clean-up took place on Sept. 16. Residents, friends and families were invited to register for coastal cleanup and approximately 60,000 volunteers were expected according to reports.

Orange County Coastkeeper started early with the Coastal Cleanup Day at various county beaches.

“We like to look at it like a celebration of what these incredible places have given us the past year,” Eben Schwartz, marine debris program manager for the California Coastal Commission told the Register. “These are resources we come to year round – we ask on this one day for everyone around the state to do their part to give back.”

Volunteers were tasked with bringing their own bags to collect trash, as well as were prompted to wear sunscreen, reusable water bottles and in most cases a waste-free lunch.

Reports from the Orange County Register stated that volunteers collected approximately 57,085 pounds of trash and recyclables in Orange County. Volunteers in Los Angeles County scooped up 29,635 pounds.
