A free, ongoing support group for adult children and families who have a loved one with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other dementias dementia meets at San Clemente Villas Thursday, Thursday, Sept 27th, 5:30 pm-7:00 pm.

Group discussions will cover many subjects including the differences between normal memory changes, mild cognitive impairment and early-stage dementia.
Attendees will learn coping strategies, detection, ways to empower those with dementia, adapting to a loved one’s changing needs, care options and more.

The support group invites care givers, relatives, and those concerned about their own memory skills, to come and ask questions of geriatric experts on hand and get their input about modern dementia identification tools, treatment, and how the Villas new “Memory Enhancement Program” (MEP) is state-of-the-art.

Gerontologist and group leader Jane L. Mahakian, Ph.D., MFT, previous director of Elder Care Programs at the University of California, San Francisco, and CEO/founder of Aging Matters, Inc., will be on hand conducting the workshop.

The event coincides with the new Memory Enhancement Program being offered to residents at the Villas’ deluxe assisted care community. Unlike some memory enhancement programs, this one is research-based using only well-proven techniques.

Participating MEP residents of the Villas attend daily memory improvement classes, conducted by Coordinator Diana Sanchez, that are loaded with cues and reminders. These provoke those residents to keep their minds and bodies in motion to help them remain as independent as possible as long as possible.

“There are classes, twice a day, covering virtually any kind of cognitive deficiency,” says Dr. Mahakian. “You want the people in MEP, even ones with mild cognitive impairment, to be as regularly stimulated as often as possible.  It is so true that using a mind helps forestall losing a mind.”

Individual supportive counseling is provided for each participant, weekly testing is done to verify progress being made, and there are monthly support groups for residents and families.

Note—Earlier this same day, Thursday, Sept. 27th, from 1pm-2 pm, and also free, there is a Grief Support Group meeting led by Dr. Mahakian at the Villas. This group helps people cope with the loss of a loved one and gain new strength and hope.
