Nike Lowers Surf Competition Returns to Trestles

Top surfers will compete for not only the wave's peak, but also a $250,000 purse and a 14-karat gold railroad spike.

Ninety-six professional surfers from around the world including the Associated Surfing Professional’s top 34 surfers will be taking over the Lower Trestles lineup May 1 through May 5 for the Nike Lowers Pro, an ASP six-star prime event.

The event is one of two prime events featured on the contiguous United States running for it’s fifth consecutive year, according to the Nike Lowers Pro website.

“Out of all of the events we have during the year this is definitely one of the ones that I get most excited about,” San Clemente Pro Surfer Patrick Gudauskas told ASP. “It’s always great to surf in front of friends and family and have the hometown crowd behind you.”

With a $250,000 prize purse, ASP point ratings and a 14-karat gold railroad spike worth $30 thousand on the line, surfers will compete at the coveted cobblestone A-frame break that is Lower Trestles, said the Nike Lowers Pro web site.

Last year’s event final featured a serious showdown between local surf star Tanner Gudauskas and powerful Brazilian surfer Miguel Pupo. Pupo proved he was a force to be reckoned claiming last year’s first place and winning $40,000 along with the gold rail road spike.
