General and Special Municipal Election - November 3, 2020
General Municipal Elections are conducted in the City of San Clemente in November of even-numbered years. The next General Municipal Election will take place in the City on November 3, 2020 for the purpose of filling two seats on the City Council, one City Treasurer and one City Clerk, each for a full term of four years. Additionally, a Special Municipal Election will be held on November 3, 2020 for the purpose of filling an unexpired term (short term for two years) on the City Council.
Process to Seek Election for Member of the City Council, City Treasurer and City Clerk
Any person desiring to seek election for Member of the City Council (full term of four years), Member of the City Council (short term of two years), City Treasurer (full term of four years) or City Clerk (full term of four years) must be a registered voter of the City of San Clemente at the time nomination papers are issued by the City Clerk. The nomination period for the November 3, 2020 election begins on Monday, July 13, 2020 and closes on Friday, August 7, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. During this period, individuals may take out, circulate, and file nomination papers. If an incumbent for one of the offices being voted upon does not file nomination papers by 5:00 p.m. on August 7, 2020, the filing period for that specific office only will be extended until August 12, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. During this extension period, any eligible person, other than the incumbent, may take out, circulate, and file nomination papers for that office.

The Notice of Election will be posted to the City’s website in June 2020.

You may also call the City Clerk’s Department at (949) 361-8345 during the nomination period to receive updates on citizens who have taken out nomination papers, filed nomination papers, and/or qualified to be placed on the ballot.

All Orange County registered voters will receive a mail-in ballot. Voters can return their ballots by mail, by depositing them in any ballot drop box in Orange County, or by voting or returning their ballot to any Vote Center in Orange County. To access the hours, locations and wait times for all Orange County Vote Centers, and to learn the locations of all ballot drop boxes in Orange County, please click here https://ocvote.com/fileadmin/vc/vclist.html. Please be aware that mailed ballots must be postmarked by November 3, 2020. Ballot drop boxes will close on November 3, 2020 (election day) at 8:00 p.m. and persons must arrive at Vote Centers on November 3, 2020 (election day) before 8:00 p.m. to cast their ballots.
Election results will start coming in shortly after the polls close on November 3, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. You can obtain periodic updates from the Orange County Registrar of Voters’ website at www.ocvote.com, via cable television Channel 854, or by calling the City Clerk’s Office at (949) 361-8345.
