San Clemente Lifeguards Sought For Summer Season

SAN CLEMENTE, CA — Do you want to know how to save a life? Can you swim roughly 800 yards in 13 and-a-half minutes or less? The City of San Clemente Marine Safety Division is getting ready for the upcoming summer season, and they are seeking qualified individuals to join its lifeguard team.

Tryouts for lifeguard positions with the city start on Feb. 20 at Marine Safety Division Headquarters, 620 Avenida Del Mar. Check-in for tryouts starts at 7 a.m., and applicants will compete in a roughly 800-yard ocean swim in 13 and-a-half minutes or less. Applicants who successfully complete the swim will then compete in a 1,200-yard run-swim-run.

Applicants are not allowed to use wetsuits, goggles, fins or other swimming aids.

The top candidates who complete the physical tests will be invited to an interview on the same day, the City wrote in a newsletter. From there, the top interviewed candidates will be invited to participate in a 92-hour training program held on Saturdays and Sundays, March 26 through April 24.

Eligible candidates must be at least 16 years old with a valid work permit by June 1, and must be available for all 92 hours of training. Applicants under the age of 18 must have a signed parental consent form prior to applying, the city said.

Applicant are required to complete a virtual application on the city's website, or they can apply in-person at Marine Safety Division Headquarters. The Ocean Lifeguard position is paid $18.24 to $22.17 and the entry level Lifeguard Trainee pay is $15.00 per hour, according to the City.
