San Clemente Opposes New Toll Road, Mayor, Council Says

"This extension would destroy our city. The answer to a toll road in San Clemente has to be unequivocally no."

SAN CLEMENTE, CA — In response to concerns about the potential adverse impacts of the toll road extension to San Clemente, the San Clemente City Council sent a letter on April 4, 2017 to the Chief Executive Officer of the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) opposing any alignment which would extend the 241 toll road through San Clemente. A copy of the letter was sent to San Clemente’s legislative representatives and elected officials in South Orange County.

On September 6, 2016 the City Council adopted a resolution opposing any extension that cuts into San Clemente, including the proposed alternatives.

The City is supportive of arterial highway solutions that will provide necessary transportation for the region and will reduce congestion on the I-5 freeway. The City encourages TCA to include a 241-to-73 toll-road route in any study of a 241 extension. Connecting the 241 to the 73 completes the toll road system and would provide significant north-south traffic relief on the I-5 and reduce congestion on all east/west arterials.

“The City believes that this arterial street solution provides the best overall benefit for mobility in South Orange County. There is no extension that slices through or ends at San Clemente that would be acceptable,” said Mayor Kathy Ward.

“This extension would destroy our city. The answer to a toll road in San Clemente has to be unequivocally no,” added Mayor Ward.
