Where there's Smoke-Robler Fire at Camp Pendleton--Latest Update for San Clemente

SAN CLEMENTE, CA— With smoke billowing in a black cloud seen all the way to San Clemente, firefighters worked through the night and into this morning to contain a brush fire that blackened about 2,000 open acres at Camp Pendleton and sent smoke billowing into the North San Diego County sky.

As of 6:15 a.m the fire burning in the military installation's northern reaches was 0 percent contained, base officials said.

As of 11 p.m. Thursday, the fire had grown considerably. Base officials said the Roblar Fire was burning at Range 409 in the northern part of the base and had grown to 2,000 acres in size and was 10 percent contained — down from 20 percent containment reported earlier in the evening.

"Camp Pendleton Fire Department will remain on scene conducting firefighting operations through the night," officials said.

Camp Pendleton Fire Department and Cal Fire were conducting aerial as well as ground firefighting operations.

Crews with the Cleveland National Forest were also reportedly providing assistance.

There have been no evacuations ordered for the fire on the base near Oceanside in northern San Diego County.

"There is no threat to personnel or structures," officials have repeatedly said.

Residents from Fallbrook, De Luz, Valley Center, San Marcos, Temecula, Murrieta and southern Orange County were among those who reported seeing smoke from the fire as it grew Thursday.

The blaze at the Marine Corps base near Oceanside was reported Thursday afternoon. Military firefighters were being assisted by crews from Cal Fire and Cleveland National Forest, according to fire officials.

The cause was not immediately clear, though it is not uncommon for fires to be sparked at Camp Pendleton by weapons training.
