You’ll Like My Mother's Day Gift from Isaac
From Aileen Brazeau, co-owner, San Clemente Villas by the Sea
My gerontologist friend, Karen Everett Watson, does not let a holiday slip by without writing something poignant to that holiday. See what she writes here about Mother’s day, Sunday, May 11th.

My children often lavish me with gifts I love. Most of their gifts to me are trees or special flowers. You know what they say about that apple. My love of growing things surely came from my momma. I know I can make her happy by finding a special flower for her to plant in her lovely garden. This year I found a Martha Washington geranium. I know it will bring my momma a lot of joy and years of beautiful blooms.
My own yard is filled with miniature roses my children have given me. I've nearly every color imaginable – red, white, yellow, pink and a gorgeous lavender one from my daughter. Each one of these gifts is a living reminder of my children's love.
I've scattered them all over my yard so there really isn't a place on the property that one of them is not in view, but even if I could not see them with my eyes I'd feel them with my heart. All three of my children are so very special. They are so different from one another and I've always rejoiced in their differences. Raising them there was never a dull moment. They've now given me nine grandchildren in all. I'm a very happy granny.
My oldest son is now a remarkable man. He's funny, kind but not the type to talk about his own feelings. If you call him on the phone, you may get a two minute conversation from him. Even in person, talk is hard to come by with him. He was always that way, even as a very young child. He now lives about an hour away, so we don't get to visit as much as I'd like.
He's a CT technician which requires a lot of hours on the job. He's also the single dad of three beautiful children. When he was married, his wife was generally the one that picked out the presents for me. She was very thoughtful with her gifts and I loved them, but last year on Mother's Day, Isaac chose my gift. It arrived in the mail and I was thrilled to get Pioneer Woman's latest cookbook, but the recipes couldn't compare to the little note Isaac had written to me. The whole message was written on a small post-it note which read:
"I'm sorry I let so much time pass without saying how much you mean to me, the wife and the kiddos. I love you and would never every could have hoped to have a mom who sacrificed themselves and loved like you."
I sat in my kitchen and wept big tears from pure joy. If I never get another gift, this one will suffice me for the rest of my life.
I honestly don't remember thinking I ever made any big sacrifices. I thought that was just part of the job description. It's what my momma did. It's what her momma did. My sacrifices must pale in comparison to theirs, but Isaac still recognized those small deeds as love. I must have did something right.
So if you're trying to find the perfect gift for mom, just think about the special things she's done for you – and tell her! It might be the best gift she's ever received – take it from me.
