Cox Launches Connect2Compete Broadband Adoption Program in Orange County

Cox Communications, along with other Connect2Compete (C2C) partners, announced today the nationwide launch of the Connect2Compete program, which offers low-cost computers and Internet access to families on the national free school lunch program. C2C is now available in all of Cox’s California markets (Orange County, Palos Verdes, San Diego and Santa Barbara).

The expanded nationwide launch follows the successful pilot of the program, of which Cox was the only cable company to participate, in San Diego last spring.

According to the Pew Research Center, less than half of low-income K-12 students across America have broadband at home compared to more than 90% of higher-income families.  What’s more, nearly 30% of all Americans – approximately 100 million people – risk becoming increasingly isolated from contemporary life because they lack the Internet service and the skills necessary to use it effectively.

Beginning today, and through the end of the year, families with K-12 children in the national free school lunch program who do not have Internet in the home can apply at www.connect2compete.org/cox or by calling 1-855-222-3252. Eligible families can receive Internet service for $9.95 a month for two years from Cox, a free modem and installation.

“We’re proud that the successful pilot of Connect2Compete in California last year helped pave the way for today’s national launch, and the opportunity for even more families to take advantage of this vital program to further their children’s education,” said Dave Bialis, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Cox’s California markets.

Broadband adoption programs have been an important part of Cox’s legacy.  The Connect2Compete program is modeled after a broadband adoption program Cox has participated in since 2002 in Santa Barbara, CA.
