God Is Great, Beer Is Good, and People Are Crazy

City Councilman Derek Reeve's introduction to God, beer, and San Juan Capistrano politics.

While wondering how Osama was enjoying his seventy two toothless transvestites down in hell, I was thinking: Now that I have been on the City Council a few months, people often ask me if it is everything I expected it to be. It is a rather simple question that is surprisingly difficult for me to answer.  I never quite know how to respond, because no answer seems satisfactory:  “It has been……it is more ……it is not as….”

Recently I was driving home from Wali-World (that is southern slang for Wal-Mart), and I was listening to country music on the radio (My fiancée is from Texas so it is basically a requirement). Then the song that came on the radio  hit me like a bullet shot from Team Six. “God is great, beer is good and people are crazy.”  That, ladies and gentlemen, describes my perspective on the politics and sociology of San Juan Capistrano. We are spiritual town that enjoy a good time and love local politics.

When I was running for office I had a lot of politicos from all over Orange County say, “I have been in politics a long time; I just don’t get San Juan Capistrano.” That is because, politically speaking, we are kind of crazy. And I love it!

With this blog I will try to give you some insight on what it is like on the inside of city government. I may from time to time discuss policy issues, national politics, or even sports. (God I cannot wait for football season to start.)  For the most part though, I will try to just provide you the common man perspective on the inside of city government.

So for now, I’m off to church, have a beer, and talk local politics. Not necessarily in that order.
