BLOG: Would You Vacation in Mexico?

Mexico vacations – are they safe?

I just read an article about new Hard Rock resorts opening in Cancun and Puerto Vallarta on Aug. 1.  he resorts will blend the rock n' roll spirit of the Hard Rock with beachfront, all-inclusive luxury. Fine dining, top-shelf drinks, 24-hour room service and live entertainment are all included in one price.

I'd like to check out the one in Puerto Vallerta – it's an easy three-hour flight from LAX or a quick stop through Phoenix from John Wayne.

When I tell people I enjoy traveling to Mexico I often get a strong, "Are you crazy?!" reaction.

Yet, Mexico is an affordable destination, and according to the U.S. State Department, millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year. Resort areas and tourist destinations in Mexico generally do not see the levels of drug-related violence and crime reported in the border region and in areas along major trafficking routes.

In fact, Mexico’s tourism agency reports that the number of foreign travelers arriving by air in 2011 rose to 22.7 million, the most since they began keeping track in 1980.

There are currently no U.S. State travel advisories in effect for the popular tourist areas of Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya and Tulum, Cabo San Lucas, San Miguel de Allende, Puerto Vallarta and nearby Riviera Nayarit.

We all have our own level of comfort with risk and unique perceptions of what is considered "dangerous." I'm curious ... would you travel to Mexico?
