405 Southbound Reopened After Pedestrian Fatality

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA โ The 405 southbound through Irvine was closed for hours Thursday following a pedestrian fatality that occurred at approximately 6 a.m. Investigators worked the area until 10:15 a.m. when the 405 reopened to southbound traffic.
At just after 6 a.m. Thursday, a woman was seen walking down the shoulder of the road wearing a blue shirt and black clothing walked into lanes, according to Santa Ana California Highway Patrol information officer Olivera.
"She went across lanes on southbound 405 just north of State Route 133 at around 6 a.m. Thursday, and that is when she was initially struck by a white box truck," Olivera said. "This was a confirmed fatality."

All southbound lanes on the 405 were closed for several hours, following the event.
A traffic break was established at Sand Canyon at just before 6:30 a.m. according to CHP, halting morning traffic and creating a commuter's nightmare.

By 8:45 a.m., the 405 both directions sat at a stop while California Highway Patrol officers conducted their investigation into the incident. All southbound 405 lanes were stopped, and traffic was diverted onto the 133.
Northbound 405 was moving at a crawl due to curious onlookers, however no other accidents were reported as a result of this incident according to Olivera.
The 405 southbound reopened at 10:30 a.m. to through traffic.
