Coroner IDs San Juan Capistrano Man Struck On Freeway

Police shut the 5 Freeway down at Junipero Serra Road offramp where a pedestrian died trying to run across the freeway, officials said.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA —A South Orange County man was struck and killed while running across the 5-Freeway was identified Monday. The Orange County coroner's office identified 21-year-old Devon Dabba, a resident of San Juan Capistrano, coroner's Investigator K. Keyes said.

An autopsy was pending, she said.

A Kia struck Dabba Friday evening while crossing the northbound San Diego Freeway at the Junipero Serra Road off-ramp, the California Highway Patrol said.

Witnesses told the CHP a tall, skinny juvenile, possibly a boy, ran from the right shoulder to the center divider before being struck. Dabba was pronounced dead at the scene. It was unclear if drugs or alcohol were involved in the collision.
The driver of a 2003 Kia remained at the scene, the CHP said. Police have not cited anyone in the incident, as of this report.

The CHP issued a 2-hour Sigalert for the HOV lane and lanes 1 and 2 just south of the Junipero Serra Road off-ramp.
