Council to Meet With Congressman Wednesday

It is slated to discuss projects that it would like to see funded with federal money.

The City Council will meet with U.S. Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Corona) at 2 p.m. Wednesday to request federal money for two San Juan Capistrano projects:

  • Close a 1.2-mile gap on Alipaz Street by extending it between Calle Rio Vista and Oso Road. The extension will traverse open space (on public and private land) and may require construction of a creek levee. The city is requesting up to $700,000 for the $30-million project.
  • Installation of a 600 kW power generator at the Groundwater Recovery Plant, as well as six generators and several pumps to increase the plant's capacity to 7.3 million gallons per day. The city is seeking $600,000 in federal dollars. The project is expected to cost $2.4 million.

In a report to the City Council, staffers note that the Obama administration is freezing discretionary spending in the next fiscal year, meaning it will not accept submissions for appropriations requests, such as those desired by the Council.

"It is requested that the congressman review the projects for consideration of any future funding that comes available," the report states.
