Man Struck, Killed On Santiago Canyon Road

A 28-year-old man was killed after striking a tree with his vehicle, exiting the car and was struck and killed by another driver.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA - A man was killed when he got out of a car after crashing into a tree and another car struck him in unincorporated Silverado, near Irvine Lake, authorities said Thursday.

The crash was reported at just before 12:45 a.m. Wednesday on Santiago Canyon Road south of Hicks Haul Road, the California Highway Patrol said.

A blue 2016 Hyundai Sonata was northbound on Santiago Canyon Road when its driver lost control as it veered to the right and left the roadway, crashing into a tree, CHP Officer B. Orozco said.

The Sonata came to rest on the west side of the road in the opposing traffic lane.
The 28-year-old man got out of the car after the crash, Orozco said.

A southbound silver 2007 Hyundai Elantra driven by a 44-year-old Mission Viejo man crashed head-on into the Sonata, which struck the 28-year-old man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Orozco said. His name was not immediately released.

A 27-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Sonata suffered minor abrasions and was taken to a hospital for treatment, the officer said. The Elantra driver was not injured.
