September 30, 4:00- 6:30 pm - “Saving the Whales: One Captain’s Tale©.” This is an author lecture/book signing (Lily: A Gray Whale’s Odyssey) about one whale’s life and the perils of gill nets just off our coast. Over 1,000/day (worldwide) are caught in these large commercial nets. One whale-watching boat captain in DP Harbor is trying to do something about it. His lecture is designed to help raise awareness of this issue and advocate for proper food labeling, so people will avoid buying by-catch fish and learn to shop for fish caught under safer, more sustainable circumstances. This will be a family event in the courtyard with food, wine, music and desserts, after which the author will be launching educational curriculum for school-age students to make them aware of the problem. This is an important subject and the event promises to be well received and well attended.
By the way, did you catch Capt. Dave on KTLA Channel 5 on August 9? He was on Gayle Anderson’s segment of the morning news; they saw blue whales and dolphins, of which there's more of each right here off our coast than anywhere else on earth. See remarkable footage at http://www.dolphinsafari.com/.
