Golden Globes: 'Boyhood' Takes Top Honor
"Boyhood" took top honors with best drama and director, while "Grand Budapest Hotel" upset "Birdman" as best comedy.

βBoyhood,β the groundbreaking family drama filmed over the course of 12 years with the same cast, was the big winner tonight at the 72nd annual Golden Globe Awards, winning prizes for best drama film, best director and supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.
Director Wes Andersonβs quirky βThe Grand Budapest Hotelβ was an upset winner of the best comedy/musical film prize, besting pre-show favorite βBirdman,β which wound up with awards for best comedy/musical actor for Michael Keaton and best screenplay.
Richard Linklater, who took home best-director honors for βBoyhood,β said the film was a personal journey for him, and βit became very personal to everyone who worked on it.β

βIt means so much to us that people have seen it and responded to it in that personal way,β he told the crowd at the Beverly Hilton hotel. β... Bottom line is, weβre all flawed in this world. No oneβs perfect. And I just want to dedicate this to my parents, who gave so much love and support, and I want to dedicate this to parents that are evolving everywhere and families that are just passing through this world and doing their best.β
Julianne Moore was named best actress in a drama for βStill Alice,β in which she plays a linguistics professor diagnosed with Alzheimerβs disease. Eddie Redmayne was named best drama actor for his role as physicist Stephen Hawking in βThe Theory of Everything.β

βGetting to spend time with Stephen Hawking, who despite all of the obstacles put in his way has lived passionately and fully and with great humor, was one of the great, great honors of my life,β Redmayne said.
Keaton, who played a washed-up actor trying to revive his career on Broadway in βBirdman,β hailed director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, saying, βThereβs not a person in this room who wonβt show up for your next gig, my brother. Iβm telling you, just name the place, you name the time.β
βThanks for being a true artist,β he said. βThanks for letting me be part of this unbelievably gutsy unapologetic look at human nature. Thanks, itβs been a ride.β
He went on to thank his family and friends, but with his voice cracking, he added, βMy best friend is kind, intelligent, funny, talented, considerate, thoughtful -- did I say kind? He also happens to be my son, Sean. I love you with all my heart buddy.β
Amy Adams was named best actress in a comedy/musical for her role as artist Margaret Keane in βBig Eyes.β She won in the same category last year for βAmerican Hustle.β
Adams said she was honored to play βa woman who had such a quiet voice and such a strong heart and such a strong artistic vision.β But she also hailed the other female actors in the room, saying women today βhave such a strong voice.β
βI have a 4 1/2 year old, and Iβm so grateful to have all the women in this room,β she said. βYou speak to her so loudly, she watches everything and she sees everything and Iβm just so grateful for all the women in this room. You have such a lovely beautiful voice.β
J.K. Simmons was named best supporting actor for his role as a fearsome jazz instructor in βWhiplash.β The win was his first career Golden Globe.
Patricia Arquette took home the Globe for best supporting actress for her role as a struggling mother in βBoyhood.β She praised Linklater for βallowing me to be part of something so human, so simple and groundbreaking and significant in the history of cinema.β
She said she was honored to play βan under-appreciated single motherβ in the film.
βThank you for shining a light on this woman and the millions of women like her, and for allowing me to honor my own mother with this beautiful character,β she said.
Common and John Legend won the prize for best original song for βGloryβ from the civil-rights-era film βGlory,β while the Globe for best animated film went to βHow to Train Your Dragon 2β and the Russian film βLeviathanβ won best foreign-language film.
Since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association adopted the split drama/comedy-musical format for the Golden Globes in 1963, 67 percent of the films that ended up with best picture Academy Awards had first received a Golden Globe.
The Golden Globe drama winner has gone on to win best picture 27 of 51 times -- 53 percent -- including last yearβs winner, β12 Years A Slave.β The musical or comedy winner has won seven times at the Oscars, including each of the first three years.
On the small screen, βFargoβ was named best television movie or miniseries, while star Billy Bob Thornton was named best actor in a miniseries or TV movie.
βThese days you get in a lot of trouble no matter what you say,β he said in accepting the award with a smile. β... I know this for a fact. So Iβm just going to say thank you.β
Maggie Gyllenhaal won for best actress in a miniseries or TV movie for Sundanceβs βThe Honourable Woman.β It was her first career Globe.
Amazon streaming videoβs βTransparent,β about a family coping with the discovery that their father -- played by Jeffrey Tambor -- is transgender, was named best comedy, topping a category that left out traditional powerhouses such as βModern Familyβ and βThe Big Bang Theory.β
Another small-screen newcomer, Showtimeβs βThe Affair,β was named best television drama, and its star, Ruth Wilson, was named best actress in a drama.
Kevin Spacey, meanwhile, won the Globe for best actor in Netflixβs drama series βHouse of Cards,β his first career Golden Globe in eight nominations.
βThis is just the beginning of my revenge,β he joked -- and he later dropped a profanity, earning him a short censoring by NBC.
Spacey recounted a conversation he once had with filmmaker Stanley Kramer, who told him that despite his success, βI just wish my films could have been better.β
βI just want to be better,β Spacey said, βbut this is very encouraging.β
Tambor was named best actor in a comedy series for his role as a transgender woman in βTransparent.β It was his first career Globe.
βThank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press for putting us on the map and making people aware of our story,β he said.
He dedicated his award to the transgender community.
βThank you for your inspiration,β he said. βThank you for your patience, and thank you for letting us be part of the change.β
Gina Rodriguez, 30, won the Globe for best actress in a television comedy for βJane the Virgin,β playing a young woman who finds out she is pregnant, despite never having sex.
βThis award is so much more than myself,β Rodriguez said. β It represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes. My father used to tell me to say every morning, βTodayβs going to be a great day, I can and I will.β Well dad, todayβs a great day, I can, and I did.β
