Gov. Jerry Brown announced Tuesday afternoon that he's walking away from talks with Republican lawmakers, essentially abandoning his pitch to put tax extensions on a June ballot. 

"Each and every Republican legislator I’ve spoken to believes that voters should not have this right to vote unless I agree to an ever-changing list of collateral demands," he said in a statement.

In the Capitol on Friday morning, before Brown announced he would halt negotiations, Fresno Unified School District Superintendent Michael Hanson told the Sacramento Bee that "if lawmakers wait until November, schools would be devastated by whatever spending cuts Brown proposed in the interim."
