Inmate Sickened, HazMat Team Responds To Orange County Jail

Firefighters responded to the jail to transport an inmate, but a hazmat team was called due to what they found in the cell.

ORANGE, CA โ€” An inmate at the Central Men's Jail was transported due to an unknown medical reason on Tuesday night, fire officials said. Officers at the jail reported discovering a substance in the man's cell, and Orange County Fire Authority's hazardous materials crew responded to the scene, according to OCFA Captain Larry Kurtz.

"Hazmat collected a sample of the substance as a precaution and determined that it was a narcotic. However, the sample was too small to determine the exact type," Kurtz said.

The area was decontaminated and cleared about 10 p.m. Tuesday.
