Junipero Serra's Last Mission Visit

Leaving San Diego two days before, Father Junipero Serra arrived at Mission San Juan Capistrano on October 9, 1783 at what would be his last time here.Β

During the weeklong stay, Serra celebrated The Feast of Pilar de Zaragosa and confirmed two hundred and twenty one people, ninety of them children.Β  The travel from mission to mission -- 600 miles -- took a heavy toll on Serra's already weakened leg and chest.Β  Saying his farewells to Capistrano on October 15, 1783, Serra would die at San Carlos Borromeo mission in August of 1784.
