Kids and Cords Don't Mix: Window Covering Safety Reminder

Did you know that window cords from window coverings can kill? October is Window Covering Cord safety month. Here's what you need to know.

It's a hidden danger in many homes across Southern California. Looped or loose window covering cords are a strangulation hazard, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

October is Window Covering Safety month, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission is reminding Americans that kids and cords don't mix.

In order to prevent child strangulation, parents are reminded of the dangers associated with cords left long and reachable by little hands.

"Many Americans raise their blinds and shades and open their windows to let in the cool breeze of autumn," the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a recent release. "CPSC warns of dangers associated with corded window coverings."

Window blinds, shades, draperies and other window coverings with cords are associated with the strangulation death of about one child a month.

"Imagine that. Now imagine that this tragic hazard can be stopped," they stated.

  • Replace corded window coverings with cordless or inaccessible cord window coverings in homes where young children live or visit.
