Last Chance: Things You Gotta Do the Week of April 16

Taxes, a name-that-park contest and nominees for the Wall of Recognition on tap this week.

Tuesday – You don't really need us to tell you this is the last day you can file your taxes, do you? If so, you're in trouble! 

Friday – The Youth Advisory Board is sponsoring a park-naming contest, which calls upon the city's youth to submit a name for the open space area that is currently referred to as the Lemon Grove Site. The deadline for submitting entries is 4:30 p.m. Friday. The contest is for participants in grades 6th through 12th. The entries should be based on historical and cultural names of local significance, geographical, natural, or geological characteristics, plants or animals indigenous to the location. The San Juan Capistrano City Council will choose the winning entry. Get your entries to City Hall,  32400 Paseo Adelanto, San Juan Capistrano, 92675.

Friday – The city is accepting nominations for its Wall of Recognition program, which was created more than a decade ago to recognize individuals whose contributions and selfless efforts have made San Juan Capistrano a more productive and pleasant place to live, work and play. Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Friday to the city manager's office at .

A nominee must reside in San Juan Capistrano and have lived in town for at least eight years. His or her service to the community must have been performed in San Juan Capistrano or can be adequately demonstrated to have directly benefited the city. Nominations must be made by a non-profit organization; by consensus (a minimum of 10 individuals whose primary residences are in town); or by recommendation from a City Council member. 

Nominations, which should be typewritten on an 8.5x11-sized letter, must include the name, age and address of the person nominated along with that of the person or non-profit making the nomination. It should include how long the nominee has lived in town, what services and the length of those services the person has provided to benefit the community and why the individual should be considered for the Wall of Recognition.

A maximum of three honorees will be chosen by a City Council subcommittee, which will make a final recommendation to the full council. The recipients will be recognized at a later council meeting, and their names will be etched on the Wall of Recognition plaque at the city's .
