If students had a Bargaining Unit that negotiated on their behalf they would ask for nothing less than what the California Constitution guarantees them:
District Funded Art, Music and Science
Why should parents be forced to fundraise for Core educational programs so that District Employees can receive compensation increases? The California Constitution guarantees EVERY student instruction in the following subjects:
- History
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- Language
- Art/Music
Relying on Fundraising and Donations to pay for Core Educational courses creates wealth based inequities within CUSD that violate the Civil rights of students who cannot afford to fundraise. Using One-Time moneys (fundraising) to pay for ongoing expenses (Art/Music/Science Curriculum) is illegal.
- PE
CUSD must use District Funds to pay for a minimum curriculum for every student BEFORE it gives any additional money to its employees. IT'S THE LAW!
Reasonable Class Sizes

"CUSD students are stacked like chord wood in our classrooms." Trustee Reardon
Every time Teachers want a raise... they increase class sizes to pay for it.
Here are CUSD's class sizes:
http://www.cuea.org/a_Version_03/contract/2015-17_Contract.pdf page 16Does anyone really agree that any child in Grades 3 and under should be in a classroom of 33 students per teacher?
The District needs to hire more teachers and restore class sizes to reasonable levels... our children are not "chords of wood"!
If Class size maximums are exceeded- CUSD teachers get an extra $105 in pay! What do students get?
Did you know that CUSD is 8,555 students over legal capacity?
High Quality Buildings
Before any employees get their 5th year of across the Board compensation increases... students are entitled to modern equipment and materials and high quality buildings-
According to Measure M Documentation... our facilities need $889 million dollars in repairs.
CUSD employees received over $120 million dollars in across the Board compensation increases over the last four years. BUT, CUSD CHOSE not spend even $10 million of that money to fix every leaky roof and failing HVAC system in the District.
Our children attend class in schools that have not been fixed or maintained for 15 years.
We have Asbestos Issues...
Rats and Other Vermin...
We have Leaky Roofs...
Failing HVAC systems...
Insufficient drinking water, bathrooms and lunch tables for the number of students on campus.
Who is Going to sit at the Collective Bargaining Table and Represent the Interest of Students?
It Certainly is not Teachers... when a District is intentionally underfunded what is in the Financial Interest of Teachers is pitted against the Educational Interest of Students.
As usual it is the Teachers ANNUAL BEG FOR A RAISE EVENT vs the Students ANNUAL BEG FOR A BASIC EDUCATION EVENT.
And the winner is?
