I just returned from a posh Cunard cruise to Norway and a few whirlwind days in London. This trip could’ve been a packing nightmare: Cunard is famous for dress up formal nights, the Norway fjords experience sweater weather in May and fast paced sightseeing in London demands sensible shoes. Despite the daunting task of choosing what to bring, I managed to pack all I needed in one bag and a knapsack! Want to know how I did it? Here are my six best tips for traveling light: 1. Find dresses that fold into your suitcase without wrinkling. Today’s fabrics are amazing – it can be done. 2. Choose a good pair of walking shoes and a pair of dress shoes that work with all your formal outfits. Really ladies. You can live with one pair of dress shoes. 3. Color coordinate your clothes so several tops work with two pairs of pants. Choose clothes that pack well like Chicos Travelers or Travelsmith knits. You can even roll them up and tuck them into small spaces in your suitcase. 4. Pack a lightweight wind breaker with a hood to deal with potential rain. Roll it up and put it in your knapsack. 5. If you must take a purse, take one that fits into your knapsack so you can carry it onto the plane as one carry on. 6. Choose a great suitcase and commit to only using that one. I recommend Rick Steve’s bag –here’s a photo of the one I've used for years. If you don’t use the expansion feature, you can carry it on the plane. I choose to put some toiletries in it that won’t make it through the carry on screening so I do use the expandable feature and check it through. Having only one bag made it manageable to ride the “tube”, London’s amazingly efficient underground system and allowed me to easily board the cost effective train to the cruise port from London. Savvy travelers pack light –you’ll have more opportunities for adventure AND saving money.
