San Juan Capistrano Celebrates the Theater with CaminOvation Awards

The Camino Real Playhouse -- a premier community theater -- Honors the Region's Top Theatrical Performances

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA — Camino Real Playhouse, now in its 27th year, announced the winners of its annual CaminOvation Awards.

The theater, located in the historic city of San Juan Capistrano, allows its staff and audience to vote on their favorite plays and performances of the season according to release.

The winners are honored with a prestigious CaminOvation Award – a symbol of excellence, dedication, and the pursuit of perfection in the craft of theatrical arts and performance.

Among the winners for the 2015-2016 season were:

  • Todd Hulet for Best Director of Legally Blonde
  • Darrell Hill for Best Supporting Actor in San Juan's Dirty Laundry
  • Erica Marie Weisz for Best Lead Actress in 39 Steps
  • Randall Huft, who won both Best Comedic Actor and Best Lead Actor for The Odd Couple.

The 2016-2017 season is now underway at the playhouse, with a slate of productions that range from the heartfelt to the humorous. The Season begins with a laugh with The Explorer's Club. Next up is the taut crime drama, Dial M for Murder.

According to release, the holiday season will be festive with a magnificent production of Miracle on 34th Street. In January, the International Play-writing Festival takes the stage.

In March, the remarkable story of The Miracle Worker comes to life at the theater. The season continues with the touching and poignant story of family relationships and growing old in On Golden Pond. And in May, Audiences will delight in the knee-slapping musical, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

"The theater holds a valued place in the heart of San Juan Capistrano, and delights both visitors and local residents alike," the release stated. "Many people plan to visit the world-famous San Juan Mission, located right across the street, and then enjoy a professional theatrical performance in the historic playhouse, which attracts some of the top talent in all of Southern California."

The non-profit theater also supports the community by providing a range of outreach activities, including acting classes, art shows, special guest speakers, and play-writing competitions.
