San Juan Capistrano May See New Pickleball Courts In Future

The San Juan Capistrano City Council will discuss whether or not to add a new pickleball court to a local park during this week's meeting.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA — Pickleball lovers, rejoice. The City of San Juan Capistrano will consider converting one of the two tennis courts on Camino Capistrano into a pickleball court during Tuesday's city council meeting.

The motion comes from a proposal by Councilmember Howard Hart after the city agreed to convert existing volleyball and basketball courts at Cook La Novia Park earlier this year. If the city decides to move forward with the proposal, several new pickleball courts could be available for community use sometime next year.

According to the report authored by Hart, a pickleball course has been offered through the Community Services Department at the westerly Camino Capistrano tennis court for the past two years. Currently, the class involves temporary court markings and is well-attended by the community.

"Given the growing popularity of pickleball, I would like staff to explore the potential of expanding this project to convert one of the two tennis courts on Camino Capistrano to multiple pickleball courts," Hart said in the report.

Generally, the City Council would evaluate proposed new park projects as part of the annual City Council Budget Workshop.

"Based on the timing of the Cook La Novia Park pickleball conversion project and a potential donation from the Open Space Foundation, I am seeking consensus from my colleagues to direct staff to explore the potential of expanding the scope of work to include the conversion of one of the Camino Capistrano tennis courts" Hart said.

The San Juan Capistrano City Council meets at 5 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 32400 Paseo Adelanto.
