SONGS Growling Near San Juan Capistrano: Siren Test Of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station

The Mass Notification Network at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station will be making noise in coming weeks as they practice the GROWL test.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA โ€” Residents of San Juan Capistrano, be advised. The emergency sirens in San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point and neighboring communities will be sounded as part of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Stationโ€™s (SONGS) Annual Growl Test. Each individual siren will undergo a low growl test for a few seconds.

No action is required of the public, the city of San Clemente said.

Camp Pendleton will test its Mass Notification System at the conclusion of SONGS Growl Testing. SONGS technicians will be present during the testing. Whether permitting, the schedule is as follows:

  • Dana Point June 5th thru June 9th
  • San Juan Capistrano June 12th thru June 16th
  • San Clemente June 19th thru June 23rd
  • State Parks & Orange County June 26th thru June 30th

The emergency siren network was installed and maintained as a requirement of SONGS to operate. Though the nuclear plant is decommissioning, the sirens can be used for any local emergency that requires public notification.
