Sports Shorts: There's One Fewer Football Team at JSerra
Lions decide to scuttle their junior varsity football team this season because of a lack of numbers; St. Margaret's lacrosse assistant accepts coaching job at Chapman.

Because there aren’t a great number of football-playing sophomores and juniors at who aren’t on the Lions’ varsity team, the school has decided it will not field a junior varsity football team this season, varsity coach Jim Hartigan told the Orange County Register.
The smallest school in terms of enrollment in the Trinity League with about 1,050 students, JSerra will continue to field two freshman football teams. In 2006, the Lions forfeited its league varsity games because of a lack of depth.
Hartigan told the Register that he did not want to see too many players have to go both ways in a JV game and did not want to have players participating in a full JV game one day and then a varsity game the next. Traditionally, JV games are used to develop players but also to give players who received little or no playing time in varsity games a chance to play.
Tartans' Assistant Coach Accepts Chapman Job
Jason Leneau, who has served as offensive coordinator and face-off coach for lacrosse team since 2005, has been hired as an assistant coach at Chapman University.
Leneau played lacrosse in high school in Baltimore and later at the University of Virginia, where he helped the Cavs appear in three Final Fours and win the NCAA National Championship in 1999. He also played professionally in the MLL for the L.A. Riptide in 2006 and ’07 and in the LXM Pro tour in 2008.
Leneau, who lives in Laguna Niguel, teaches life science and P.E. at St. Margaret’s, where he is also the school's strength and conditioning coordinator. He also runs a number of lacrosse camps in the county. Leneau is currently pursuing a master’s degree in health at Chapman.
His primary coaching responsibilities at Chapman, under second-year head coach Dallas Hartley, will be to work with the offense and midfield, on face-offs, and serve as the team's strength and conditioning coordinator.
