Grab some pain killers. Our index could give you whiplash.

Editor's Note – In this feature, we check on the health of the Fortune 500 companies which have a presence in San Juan Capistrano.

Another week of whiplash. The Dow Jones Industrial Average may have lost a .65 percent, the S&P may have losts .37 percent, but our index is all over the place!

Sempra Energy was a our big winner, gaining 7.4 percent on the week, with RadioShack Corp. the biggest loser. That's not really a surpise, given its recent stock performance, plummeting on Jan. 30 and never really recovering.

In other news, remember spin-offs? The opposite of mergers and acquisitions, when a company would take a division and let it fly independentally, attracting new investors like an IPO? 3Com spinning off Palm Computing. Hewlett Packard spinning off Agilent Technologies.

Some Business Briefs for You: 

Nice weather we've been having. What's the weather report doing in a business column? According to 123jump.com, the warmer weather and an early Easter (Happy Easter!) has contributed to better retail sales, with TJX Cos. Inc. and Ross Stores Inc. benefitting.

Speaking of retail, Rite Aid Corp.'s same-store sales rose 3.6 percent in March, the biggest increase in five years, according to Fox Business. Still hasn't helped its stock price much.

I caught up with the ladies from the at the breakfast on Wednesday. Occupancy for the two-month old hotel is running at 82 percent. That's phenomenal by hotel industry standards.

If your travels take you to New England, you'll notice a different menu at the McDonald's there, according to the Providence Journal. The company offers five pastries for breakfast (and really, all day), and it's not a test program. They just really like their sweets back East. 

Working Mother Magazine has named PetSmart Inc. as one of the best places a mother can work an hourly job. 

Who knows social media best? (Patch, but I mean in the SJC Patch 25.) Starbucks Corp., according to PhaseOne, an advertising research firm, reported Stocksandshares.tv.
